If you didn’t already know, oxybenzone and octinoxate — two popular sunscreen ingredients — are harmful to coral reefs, which, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, are vital members of marine ecosystems that protect beaches from erosion and support biodiversity. A study published in the journal Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology found that oxybenzone has a toxic effect on young coral, which can lead to DNA damage and death. Along with octinoxate, oxybenzone also contributes to coral bleaching, where the coral loses its color. For these reasons, Hawaii recently passed legislation that takes effect January 1, 2021; it will ban the sale, offer of sale, or distribution of any sunscreens containing these ingredients without a prescription issued by a licensed health care provider to preserve marine ecosystems.

While Hawaii is the first place to ban sunscreen ingredients, we believe it will become a trend in the coming years, as these ingredients have proven to be harmful to coral reefs.
