Improve Your Skin with Essential Oils
Essential oils are huge in the skin care industry, and for good reason. Ancient Egyptians were known to use essential oils for a variety of benefits including healing, aromatherapy, and skin care. They’re a natural alternative to synthetic fragrances, and they pack some benefits of their own, improving the efficacy of some skin care products. If you’re looking to add an extra kick to your current products, or you’re just curious about the skin care benefits of essential oils, here is a quick breakdown of the best natural oils and what you should use for your skin type.
Oily Skin
For all you oily skin sufferers out there, we salute you. From carrying around a blotting pack to breaking out because of larger pores on your face, having oily skin isn’t easy to live with. However, there are essential oils that can help to normalize and regulate oil production. Essential oils like orange, bergamot, lemon, and lime are great options for skin conditions. The astringent and skin-balancing properties in citrus oils reduce excess sebum and tighten large pores. After consistent use, people with oily skin should be more balanced.
Dry Skin
Plenty of essential oils help to keep skin hydrated, but there are a few that work better than others. Tea tree oils, cedarwood, myrrh, sandalwood, and sunflower seed oils are great choices to protect against dry itchy skin. For even better results, pair any of these essential oils with a base such as shea butter or cocoa butter to moisturize your skin and preserve its youthful look.
Luckily, we have just the thing. Our Cocoa Butter Skin Care Cream is made with soothing aloe vera, sunflower seed oil, and vitamin E. And don’t even get us started on the benefits of vitamin E for dry skin.
Aging Skin
Fine lines and wrinkles are just a part of life, but you don’t have to look your age to use these essential oils. From tangerine and frankincense to geranium and lavender, they can help your skin look more youthful and resilient. And you don’t have to break the bank for all of those natural oils. We have a deep line of vitamin E products, and our vitamin E oil specifically can help with signs of aging. A few drops for a night treatment and you’ll start to notice those visible fine lines and wrinkles diminish.
Photosensitive Oils
As a word of caution, be mindful of the oils you’re using. Some are actually photosensitive, which means your skin can become more susceptible to sun damage. The main ones will include citrus essential oils like lime, lemon, orange, and bergamot. Although you may be more susceptible for just a few hours, exercise caution. We recommend using these as a night treatment, especially if you have oily skin. And of course, never forget to apply sunscreen daily.
How to Use Oils Safely
Too much of a good thing can be bad, and essential oils definitely pack a potent punch. Always dilute the oil with a base or carrier oil to improve its efficacy and reap the full benefits of its natural goodness. Some good carrier oils to mix with include avocado oil, coconut oil, olive oil, and jojoba oil, just to name a few. Also, try to keep it away from your eyes, lips, and any damaged or broken skin. Because a little bit of essential oil goes a long way, a 2% dilution is generally recommended, but be on the lookout for any allergic reactions or uncommon skin symptoms.
Many essential oils can work for different skin types. We like to make many of our products with natural essential oils, so we can make sure we’re making the highest quality skin care products for every skin type.
